Kentucky's deer season is now less than two months out, and with a cool snap this weekend, my thoughs can't help but turn to the upcoming season. The Poor Boys crew has been putting out corn and running trail cameras for about 6 weeks, and have so far been very disappointed in the quality of bucks we are seeing. I keep telling myself that it is still early and that some of the big boys from last year will show soon. So just to remind myself of what may be running around out there, I went through the old trail camera pics from last year and decided to pull out a few to include in our "2009 Hit List" These are the bucks that I hope made it through last season and will still be hanging around come September.
First up - Hershey. This buck had a wide, dark (hence the name) nine-point rack and was one of the first bucks to start showing up at the corn last year. Unfortunately he disappeared early in the bow season and hasn't been spotted since.

Next - Marble. This was another nice nine-pointer, with a tall, heavy rack. The name came from the dark blotches on the rack shortly after shedding its velvet that gave it a "marbled" look. He made a lot of trail cam pics up until the rifle season and has since been a no-show.

Next - The Big Eight. This is the buck that torments me! This was his second year on the trail cameras, and he really seemed to like getting his picture taken! I only saw him once from the stand and it was after legal shooting light - an encounter I will never forget. We know he made it through the gun season, but don't know of his fate after that.

Next - Lil Brother. This is another 8-pointer that always seemed to be hanging with The Big Eight. He hasn't been seen since last gun season.

Lastly - Sticker. This is a deer that we didn't find until gun season and we played cat and mouse with this deer for a month. The last evening of gun season, I decided to take my son to a different farm, and I ended up with pictures of Sticker standing in front of the trail camera for close to an hour during daylight hours....go figure! We know he survived all the gun seasons, as I have a trail cam pic of him as late as New Years Eve.

Unfortunately, we don't yet know the fate of any of these bucks. As we continue to check the trail cameras we will keep you posted on what we are seeing and we will be sure to point out any of the "Hit List" that return to the area.

Wow, those are some nice deer! I'd be thrilled at a shot at any one of those bucks. I hope they all made it through last season and you start getting pictures of them. It's hard not to think that Hershey and Marble probably got harvested on another property. Hopefully, they are just good at flying under the radar. I've had that happen quite a bit in the last few years - get pictures of a good buck or two on a regular basis and then shortly after the season opens they quit showing up. Every time I hear a shot ring out in the distance I think they are probably shooting at one of the deer I've been scouting. Just one of those things you have to deal with when hunting a smaller property.
